The main market characteristics

The broadcasting sector is gradually being opened to competition. The historic broadcaster TDF once a monopoly, is competing with other broadcasters:

·        to broadcast programs for private channels of analogue terrestrial television since the adoption of the Law of 30 September 1986

·        to broadcast programs for public channels of analogue terrestrial television since July 25, 2003

·        to broadcast programs of all TNT channels since its launch in March 2005

Some définitions :

Multiplex: entity asked to conclude contracts of broadcasting for the channels of the TNT

Diffuser: entity asked by the multiplexes to assure the technical service of broadcasting of the programs

Administrator of infrastructures of broadcasting: entity owner of the site or administrator of the infrastructures which belong to third parties (“collectivités territoriales” for example)

Downstream wholesale market / upstream wholesale market:

To be able to propose programs to the televiewers, the TNT channels lean indirectly on two big wholesale markets:

·        Downstream wholesale market on which the multiplexes buy to a diffuser a service of broadcasting

·        Upstream wholesale market on which diffusers buy the access to the infrastructures of a third party to settle their own equipments

1) Up stream wholesale market
2) Downstream wholesale market
3) Retail market
